Political blogger, former state Legislative staffer and business lobbyist C.B. Forgotston battled clinical depression his whole life, his wife reveals in a post this week on her late husband’s blog.
C.B. Forgotston died on Jan. 3 from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Ella Joy “E.J.” Adams Forgotston posted to Forgostston.com on Tuesday to explain his death, writing he was diagnosed with clinical depression and that ‘mental problems’ ran in his family.
“He was not an unhappy person, as some people have suggested to me in recent days,” she writes. “No, he suffered from a mental illness that he could no longer control at the end.”
Though he was treasured by many for his willingness to speak his mind about Louisiana politics, he remained private about his mental illness, which he maintained with medicine.
When she beckoned him to tell his close friends and a major business client about his depression, she says her husband could not bring himself to write the message. So she did.
Despite the depression, E.J. Forgotston says she and her husband had a great life together, both at work and personally. She says she hopes her public post would benefit others with clinical depression.
“My hope is ... I can encourage others in a similar situation to find the help they need, before it’s too late.”
