Longtime East Baton Rouge Parish Clerk of Court Doug Welborn easily won his re-election bid Saturday against fellow Republican Sarah Holliday-James.
Welborn, who has been clerk for more than 21 years, defeated Holliday-James with 73 percent of the vote.
Welborn was unaffected by late-in-the-game revelations this week that his office has been spending tens of thousands of dollars on frequent meals and travel for his employees. He also spent several hundreds of public dollars at sporting good and home supply stores, including Cabelas, West Marine boating store, Lowe’s and Home Depot. A spokesman for his office said all of the expenditures were business-related.
During the campaign, Welborn said his office is geared toward public service, from running elections to issuing marriage licenses to processing lawsuits and traffic tickets. The clerk of court has offices in City Hall, the 19th Judicial District Courthouse, the downtown archives facility and a Coursey Boulevard branch.
