Lawmakers in the Louisiana House have agreed to let the public have access to email addresses and online screen names of registered sex offenders.

The proposal by Republican Rep. Cameron Henry, of Metairie, would allow “limited disclosure” of the information to someone who requests it to identify or monitor registered sex offenders.

Henry says the bill is aimed at helping parents keep their children away from sex offenders when they play video games or participate in other online activities.

The Louisiana State Police, which keeps the registry, wouldn’t be able to provide names or other identifying information to link a specific registered sex offender with the information that’s released.

A 99-0 vote Monday of the House sent House Bill 1146 to the Senate for consideration.
