Legislation to elect Baton Rouge City Court judges at-large zipped through the Louisiana House Thursday morning.

House Bill 1151 aims to create the potential for a structure of three black judges and two white judges as a federal court judge deliberates on a lawsuit over the current set-up. The current districts’ demographics were geared toward electing three white judges and two black judges.

State Rep. Erich Ponti, R-Baton Rouge, spent little time explaining the bill. “This is a local bill, city of Baton Rouge only,” he told his colleagues.

The House voted 87-0 in favor of sending the bill to the state Senate for debate.
