Both eastbound lanes of Interstate 10 will be closed this weekend near Sorrento, beginning at 9 p.m. Friday and opening back up at 5 a.m. Monday, weather permitting, the Department of Transportation and Development said.

I-10 east will be closed where the interstate intersects with U.S. 61/Airline Highway near Sorrento in Ascension Parish. The U.S. 61 on-ramp to I-10 east will also be closed, while the repaired deck span section of the bridge for the westbound on-ramp from U.S. 61 to the interstate is installed.

It's the second time that I-10 east has been closed at that point, in recent months, due to work being done on the westbound on-ramp.

Rodney Mallett, public information officer with the DOTD, said the closure this weekend is expected to be the last full lane closure of the interstate for the project.

There possibly might be a single-lane closure while concrete is poured for the newly installed deck span, he said, but added that DOTD would get notification of that out early.

Mallett said Thursday that the repaired westbound on-ramp from U.S. 61 should be ready to open to drivers in about another month.

The suggested detour for drivers traveling eastbound on I-10 this weekend is to exit onto U.S. 61. They would then drive to La. 641 to get back to I-10, the DOTD said.
