The Plaquemine Ferry leaves Plaquemine as it heads east across the Mississippi River, Thursday, October 19, 2017, to Sunshine, La.

The Plaquemine Ferry will shut down at 5 p.m. as Tropical Storm Barry approaches landfall in Louisiana Saturday, the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development announced mid-afternoon Friday.

[Update, 10 a.m. Saturday: Barry has been upgraded to a hurricane.]

The ferry is set to resume operations once the U.S. Coast Guard reopens activity on the Mississippi River.
