I-10 eastbound was closed near Port Allen as crews worked to recover a disabled vehicle, the state Department of Transportation and Development said.

I-10 eastbound was closed at La. 1 near Port Allen around 3:40 p.m. Monday while West Baton Rouge deputies struggled to transfer some racehorses from a malfunctioning trailer onto a functioning one, officials said.

Traffic was backed up an estimated four miles by the time one lane was opened up again after 4 p.m.

The chaos started when a horse trailer came loose from the truck that was pulling it on the Mississippi River Bridge, said Zack Simmers, a spokesman for the West Baton Rouge Sheriff's Office.

Somehow, none of the horses were injured. Deputies brought another trailer to the scene and got the horses loaded onto that one.

The loading process took some time because the horses were used to walking up a ramp, not stepping up directly into the trailer, officials said.
