Regarding Ms. Williams’s article on Ira Thomas, I can’t help but notice how lenient Judge Morgan was with his sentence. His fine is less than the amount of bribe money he accepted! Is there any chance that “celebratory” reactions to corrupt officials might contribute to the repeated convictions of School Board presidents? If it has already happened twice in the past five years, what will dissuade the next School Board president from accepting a bribe, seeing as how “lenient” the punishments are? The image of Mr. Thomas smiling adds insult to injury. There is no hope for curing this major issue in society if these criminals continue to get minuscule punishments.
