As I sat here, heartbroken, reading the article about the tragic death of an 8-month old child and his critically injured mother, I wondered what it will take for the leaders of Jefferson Parish to get serious about putting up barriers along the open canals in this parish. Oh, I know: when a parish leader or a state official has that happen to a member of their family, then the barriers will happen and happen very quickly.

It’s hard to believe that we live in the 21st century and have so many open canals. I hope that the powers to be can feel the pain that this family is going through at this time and take some needed action to correct this serious problem.

This should be a budget priority before more lives are taken.
