LSU’s Jim Hawthorne talks ‘Louisiana Hayride,’ his favorite memories and his future in the booth _lowres

Advocate staff photo by TRAVIS SPRADLING -- Jim Hawthorne will retire after the 2015-16 basketball season.

We’ve got another baseball season with Jim Hawthorne, but he’s retiring as the voice of the LSU Tigers after that.

His play-by-play has been the accompaniment to 35 years of sports for LSU fans in Louisiana. But he’s hanging up the microphone — “an icon,” as baseball Coach Paul Maineri says.

Hawthorne’s been on the mic for nine national championship games — eight of them LSU wins — and 22 football bowl games.

Thanks for the memories, Mr. Hawthorne.
