1. WHAT WE LEARNED
Southern can play defense, too. The Jaguars defense has been effective at times this season, but inconsistent. It had one of its poorer games of the season in a 47-42 loss to Prairie View last week, allowing more than 500 total yards and 11 conversions on 16 third downs. But their effort against Texas Southern was about as a dominant as a defense can be, allowing fewer than 100 yards and getting eight sacks and two takeaways.
2. TRENDING NOW
The running game. Southern has run the ball well virtually all season, and Lenard Tillery was the leading rusher in the SWAC entering the game. But the Jaguars and Tillery took it to another level Saturday. Tillery had a career-high 196 yards and two touchdowns and Southern ran for a total of 305 yards and probably could have won without throwing a single pass.
3. FINAL THOUGHTS
Dawson Odums must have had a pretty good halftime speech. Not only was Southern tied at halftime, the Jaguars had squandered a fast start, watching TSU score the final 14 points of the first half after the Tigers fell behind 21-7. But things were much different after halftime as Southern immediately forced a fumble and turned it into three points that led to an 12-0 scoring edge in the third quarter and a 19-0 edge in the second half.
