DENHAM SPRINGS — Catholic High weathered a barrage of shots on goal early in the second half, and went on to post a 2-0 win over Denham Springs in Division I, District 3 boys soccer action Friday night.
Catholic took a 1-0 on Cole Cazenave’s goal in the ninth minute. After holding off a Yellow Jackets' surge to start the second half, Brogan Bourgeois added a goal in the 59th minute to give the Bears breathing room.
For Catholic (14-2-2, 5-0) has won five straight district titles and 11 of the past 12.
“Denham Springs is an offensive powerhouse. They play three in the back and love to bomb guys forward,” Catholic coach Josh McReynolds said. “Our back line weathered the storm, and we got fortunate a few times.
“Once we settled in about 10 minutes into the second half, we were OK.”
Denham Springs (13-3-2, 3-1) had chances, including a near miss in the first minute of the second half. Collin Turner’s shot from 20 yards out hit the crossbar square and rebounded back into play.
Minutes later, Daniel Georges shot from 30 yards left of the goal appeared headed for the upper right corner of the net. The ball curved just outside the goal post for a missed chance.
In the 53rd minute, Denham Springs generated a corner kick. After the Catholic defense clogged up the middle on three shots, William Chevalier’s kick sailed over the crossbar.
“We knew they could score,” senior defender Eli Weathers said after the Bears held Denham Springs scoreless for only the second time this season.
“We knew (Chevalier) would always be on our back shoulder, and (Turner) is a great player," McReynolds said. "I have to thank our center midfielders for running hard and keeping them in front.”
Catholic took the lead in the ninth minute on Cazenave’s team-leading ninth goal of the season. After taking possession in the midfield, Cazenave sent the ball long down the right side, outrunning the defense to pick it up again. From there, he maneuvered toward to the center and placed his kick inside the upper far post.
Denham’s best chance to tie before halftime came in the 28th minute. Jose Ortega had possession right of the goal, but his pass was cleared out by Jacob Limbocker.
Bourgeois scored after chasing down a pass from Weathers left of the goal. He waited before making his run, but his shot was partially blocked by Jackets keeper Brandon Lovett. The ball was nearly cleared by a Denham defender before rolling into the net.
“The back line had been playing so hard, and Eli played a great ball to the top,” Bourgeois said. “I owed it to those guys to finish it for them.”
