After day one of the LHSAA golf tournaments only one local school, defending champion University High, emerged as a title contender.

The Cubs sit in second place behind Ascension Episcopal after Monday’s first round of Division III action at The Wetlands in Lafayette.

Shreveport’s C.E. Byrd built a 12-stroke lead over Alexandria Senior High in the Division I boys competition also at The Wetlands.

St. Thomas More in Division II and St. Frederick in Division IV are the other boys leaders. STM leads Benton by one stroke.

Captain Shreve of Division I and Lacassine in Division II claimed first-round leads in the girls tourneys at Les Vieux Chenes in Youngsville.

The final rounds for boys teams in four divisions and girls teams in two divisions are Tuesday on the same three Lafayette area courses.

DIVISION I: Byrd finished at 287 after one round, with Alexandria (299) in second. Catholic High is fifth at 310.

West Monroe’s Joey Kirkland and Charlie Flynn of Byrd each carded a 2-under-par 70 to tie for first through 18 holes. Kirkland shot a sizzling 3-under on the back nine.

Catholic’s Carson Caruso is tied with Byrd’s Luke Atchison for ninth at 3-over 75. Byrd has four golfers in the top 10.

DIVISION II: St. Thomas More sits at 326 and Benton is at 327 in the team standings. Benton’s Hayden White and STM’s Matt Weber both shot a 2-under 70 at Farm d’Allie in Carencro.

Sam Dupeire of St. Michael the Archangel is  third at 77, while Lutcher’s Clarence Morse carded an 81 and is tied for eighth.

DIVISION III: Ascension Episcopal’s Eli Ortego shot a 2-under-par 70 to take individual lead. Ortego carded three birdies and had just one bogey to help AES finish atop the team standings at 306, eight strokes ahead of U-High at 314.

Episcopal sits in third at 330. The Knights’ John Hayden Wood finished two shots behind Ortego at 72. Pine’s Tanner McKenzie at 73 and Luke Haskew of U-High at 75 were also among the top individuals.

DIVISION IV: Monroe-based St. Frederick raced out to a 28-stroke lead during the first round played also at The Farm d’Allie.

Grayson Gilbert of St. Frederick carded six birdies and had a 1-over score of 73 to top the individual leaderboard. Gilbert leads teammate John Witherington and Oliver Nickel of Episcopal School of Acadiana by five strokes. St. Frederick sits at 327, while defending champion ESA is at 355.


DIVISION I: Sulphur’s Brooke Tyree shot a 1-over-par 75 and leads Captain Shreve’s Rachel Dupree and Madeline Boudreau of the Academy of Our Lady by one stroke.

Tyree birdied the 15th and 16th holes to erase a two-shot lead Boudreau held much of the way.

Captain Shreve is at 160 in the team standings and has a three-stroke lead on Sulphur at 163. St. Louis Catholic is next at 174. Boudreau shot a 35 on the front nine to claim the early lead.

DIVISION II: Lacassine sits at 158 and holds a five-shot lead over Academy of Sacred Heart and Newman.

Like Tyree, Newman’s Liza Lapeyre shot a 1-over 75 to finish atop the individual list. Lacassine’s Carley Whittington is next at 77. Riely Heaslip of Episcopal is tied for fifth at 81.
