HOUSTON - The LSU men's tennis team started off strong Friday, winning six out of eight single matches, at the Rice Invitational.

Senior David Roberts, juniors Stefan Szacinski and Roger Anderson, sophomores James Turbervill and Matt Zachary and freshman Chris Simpson all racked up wins in singles play for the Tigers, defeating players from Arkansas, Tulane and Rice.

In doubles, Szacinski and Anderson paired to defeat Tulane's Cedric Rutsaert and Iain Sneddon, 8-2, while Bowtell and Simpson fell to the Arkansas tandem Greg Lehmann and Mike Ward 9-7 in a tough match. Turbervill and Zachary, and Knights and Roberts represented the Tigers well in Flight B, but could not hold on.

The tournament continue Saturday.

Women's tennis

LADY TIGERS BEGIN SFA FALL INVITATIONAL WITH DOUBLES WIN: In Nacogdoches, Texas, LSU women's tennis players Hayley Everett and Paige Bahnsen won in doubles over TCU's Gabbi Fernandez and Molly Welsch on Day 1 of the Stephen F. Austin Fall Invitational.

The victory came after both lost in their first singles match of the tournament.

Play resumes at the SFA Fall Invitational at 9 a.m. Saturday with Everett and Bahnsen taking on Vivian ten Dolle and Melanie Urvoy of Louisiana Tech in the B Doubles second round.

In singles, Everett will face TCU's Fernandez and Bahnsen will play TCU's Molly Welsh.

Swimming and diving

WOMEN TOP TULANE: LSU opened the season by sweeping all 16 events against Tulane at the LSU Natatorium, winning 193-98.

Freshman diver Alex Bettridge was victorious in her two events, scoring a 318.00 in the one-meter competition and a 268.57 in the three-meter competition.

Junior Jana Ruimerman posted a career best time of 10:20.74 in the 1,000-yard freestyle, good for first.

Junior Sara Haley posted two first place finishes in the 200 butterfly (1:59.51) and the 500 free (4:59.00), as well as being a part of two first place relay teams.

Senior Samantha Goates swept the sprint freestyle competitions and cranked out a 50 free time of 23.87 and a 100 free time of 52.44.

Sophomore Torrey Bussey earned two victories in the 100 breast (1:04.30) and the 200 individual medley (2:04.90). Her 200 IM time was over four and a half seconds faster than her closest competitor.

Freshmen Kaetlin Sepp and Amber Carter emerged victoriously in their first collegiate competitions. Sepp notched her first victory by winning the 100 backstroke with an impressive time of 57.66. Carter posted a time of 57.28 in the 100 fly and almost won the event by over 2 seconds.

Men's gymnastics

GRAND REUNION WEEKEND SET: The Tigers celebrate their history with a reunion weekend around campus starting Friday.

Members of the men's gymnastics program, which competed from 1968-1984 in NCAA competition, will be honored during the LSU football game against Kentucky on Saturday, as well as participating in other activities this weekend.


BAT GIRL APPLICATIONS BEING ACCEPTED: Applications for the 2012 LSU Bat Girls squad are being accepted now through Monday, October 31 at 3 p.m., when they must be submitted to the LSU Baseball office.
