Did he commit or didn’t he? That was the question regarding Maquedius Bain after an official weekend visit to LSU.

Three national recruiting services — 24/7 Sports, Rivals and Scout — reported that Bain became LSU’s 24th commitment Sunday.

Meanwhile, ESPN held back, saying Bain is not ready to make a commitment public and will wait until an announcement Jan. 4 at the Under Armour All-American Game in St. Petersburg, Fla.

There was little doubt on any front that Bain — a 6-foot-5, 285-pound defensive tackle from Fort Lauderdale (Fla.) University — was wowed by his weekend in Baton Rouge, telling ESPN that he would feel comfortable playing at LSU.

A decommitment from Florida State in July, Bain took official visits to Oklahoma and Marshall in November before making the trip to Baton Rouge this weekend.

Bain is a four-star prospect according to ESPN and Scout, rating him No. 43 and No. 245, respectively, on their lists of top national prospects.

Rivals and 24/7 Sports give Bain three stars.

LSU had several other major prospects in for official visits over the weekend, including five-star defensive back Priest Willis (6-2, 199) of Tempe (Ariz.) Marcos de Niza; Miami Southridge safety/athlete Jamal Carter (6-1, 190), a Miami commitment; and Durham (N.C.) Milford tight end Josh McNeil (6-5, 226), an Alabama commitment ranked No. 131 on the ESPN 150.

Willis is ranked as high as No. 23 nationally according to Scout, while Carter tops out at No. 197 on the 24/7 Sports Top 247.

Meanwhile, ESPN reports that wide receiver Courtney Gardner (6-2, 215) of Sierra (Calif.) College is weighing whether to come to LSU or make himself available for the NFL draft.

Gardner has said he considers himself an LSU commitment, but he reportedly would need to complete a spring semester at his junior college before he could attend LSU in the fall.

Starting Monday, football recruiting enters a dead period that extends through Jan. 3 except for contact that is permitted with mid-year enrollees.

The national signing period begins Feb. 6.
