LSU’s Brad Wing and Louisiana Tech’s Ryan Allen on Friday were named as semifinalists for the Ray Guy Award, which recognizes college football’s top punter, the Augusta Sports Council announced.
Wing is the only freshman on the list of 10 semifinalists. There are also six juniors and three sophomores.
Wing is averaging 43.4 yards on 37 punts. He’s had 19 of his punts downed inside the 20-yard line and 12 have traveled at least 50 yards. Last week, Wing connected on a career-best 73-yard punt at Alabama.
Reid on academic team
LSU sophomore safety Eric Reid on Friday was named to the Capital One Academic All-District team, the College Sports Information Directors of America announced. Reid has a 3.33 grade point average in business administration.
Ex-boxers at museum
Fans can meet and hear from former Tigers boxing champions Pee Wee Moss, Crowe Peele and Bobby Freeman at the Andonie Sports Museum Saturday.
A program paying tribute to LSU’s 1949 national championship team will begin at 2 p.m. Saturday at 3828 West Lakeshore Drive, next to the Lod Cook Alumni Center and Hotel at LSU. It is free.
Don Landry, author of “ Boxing: Louisiana’s Forgotten Sport” and former athletic director and basketball coach at Nicholls State, will moderate. Landry’s book will also be on sale.
