HOOVER, Ala. - LSU scored three runs in the top of the first inning and Cody Glenn and the bullpen made sure that was a enough in a 3-0 victory against Alabama in the Southeastern Conference Baseball Tournament on Wednesday afternoon at Hoover Metropolitan Stadium.
Mark Laird drove in the first run with a groundout and Raph Rhymes and Christian Ibarra added RBI singles against Crimson Tide starter Charley Sullivan (5-6).
Glenn (7-2) pitched seven scoreless innings, allowing five hits and hitting two batters. He struck out two and walked none.
Nick Rumbelow relieved to start the eighth and worked out of a jam. Kenny Roberts singled with one out and George Salem followed with a hard-hit grounder that first baseman Tyler Moore misplayed for an error. Kyle Overstreet lined to left and Ben Moore grounded to second.
Chris Cotton pitched a perfect ninth for his 13th save.
Second-seeded LSU (49-8) will play third-seeded Arkansas (36-19), which defeated Ole Miss 2-1 in 10 innings Wednesday, in a winner's bracket game at 4:30 p.m. Thursday. The Tigers won two out of three against the Razorbacks in Fayetteville, Ark., on April 12-14.
Seventh-seeded Alabama (33-25) will play Ole Miss (37-22) in an elimination game at 9:30 a.m. Thursday.
Sean McMullen led off the LSU first by lining a single and went to third when the ball skipped past left fielder Andrew Miller.
Laird's grounder to short sent McMullen home and Alex Bregman followed with a double to left, the first of his three hits.
Mason Katz walked and both runners took off as Raph Rhymes hit a soft roller that Sullivan fielded in front of the mound. Sullivan threw to first to get Rhymes but Bregman and Katz never let up and Bregman scored and Katz slid into third. Ibarra singled home Katz for a 3-0 lead.
Sullivan settled in after that and held the Tigers scoreless for the next eight innings, but the Tide couldn't break through against Glenn.
In the first Overstreet reached on a two-out infield single but Moore grounded out. Glenn got Bama in order in the second before hitting Andrew Miller leading off the third. Chance Vincent flied out and Roberts hit into a double play.
Salem led off the fourth with an infield single, but Glenn got Overstreet to hit into a double play and Moore to pop to second.
Brett Booth got a two-out single in the fifth, then Glenn struck out Miller. Vincent led off the sixth with an infield single, but Glenn got three straight flyouts.
Glenn got the first two outs in the seventh before dealing with multiple base runners for the first time when he hit Smith and Booth singled to center. Miller hit a roller up the right side and Tyler Moore made a tricky grab on an in-between hop and threw a strike on the run to Glenn for the out.
