Ray Thornton is on the move.

A week into spring practice, LSU coaches have moved redshirt freshman Ray Thornton from the F-linebacker position — a more typical outside linebacker — to the buck, a hybrid edge-rushing position.

Ed Orgeron said later Tuesday that Thornton will place both the F and buck, two interchangeable position. He began learning the buck on Tuesday.

The move coincided with the absence of sophomore buck linebacker Sci Martin. Martin suffered an injury in Saturday's scrimmage at Tiger Stadium. Orgeron addressed all of the injuries and absentees here

Martin was one of a host of players absent from practice, including defensive lineman Christian LaCouture, defensive back Andraez Williams, running back Derrius Guice and tight end Jamal Pettigrew.

LaCouture told The Advocate on Monday that he may be resting some this spring, as he's dealing with what he called "scar tissue" in his rehabilitated knee. Guice posed for a photo in the LSU locker room before practice, so his absence does not appear to be serious in nature. Pettigrew also missed last Thursday's practice because of an injury.

Thornton, meanwhile, moved from behind Corey Thompson at F-outside linebacker to the buck, where he rotated with Andre Anthony and Isaiah Washington.

Other observations from Tuesday's 25-minute viewing window:

  • In gold: OL Donavaughn Campbell (shoulder) and FB J.D. Moore (wrist) remained in gold jerseys, signifying limited contact because of injury.
  • No. 1 O-line: The starting five on the offensive line has not changed. It remains LT K.J. Malone, LG Garrett Brumfield, C Lloyd Cushenberry, RG Maea Teuhema, RT Jakori Savage. Please keep in mind that two projected starters are out for spring - center Will Clapp and RT Toby Weatherdby.
  • Coach watching: Oregon defensive coordinator Jim Leavitt watched practice Tuesday. He mainly focused on LSU DC Dave Aranda.
