LSU opened preseason camp on Thursday morning and allowed reporters about 15 minutes to watch drills. The Tigers are holding split-squad practices. The afternoon portion of practice begins at 4:30 p.m.

Here are videos, photos and news nuggets from the open portion of the morning practice.

Rookies: This was dubbed as the “veteran” portion of the two practices Thursday, but there were at least five freshmen participating with the experienced guys (the freshmen and select veteran practice will be this afternoon). So who were the five? They were all on defense: DEs Arden Key and Isaiah Washington, DBs Kevin Toliver, Xavier Lewis and Donte Jackson.

Thomas back: DT Quentin Thomas practiced for the first time since the bowl week in December. Thomas played the latter half of last season with two torn biceps. He had surgery to repair at least one of them during the off-season and missed spring practice.

QBs: Brandon Harris was taking the first-string snaps during drills. Anthony Jennings took the second-string reps. Harris was the QB with starting RB Leonard Fournette and No. 1 FB JD Moore, while Jennings had RB Darrel Williams and FB Tony Upchurch behind him.

Other injuries: LB Lamar Louis donned a green non-contact jersey during drills. We’ll find out more on his injury later today at player interviews or when Les Miles speaks to reporters at 6:45 p.m.

No. 1 recruit: Rashan Gary, the top-ranked 2016 recruit in the nation, watched practice, mostly observing D-line coach Ed Orgeron and the D-line drills. He’s in the midst of visiting campus and is expected to include LSU in his top few schools.
