The No. 6 LSU men’s golf team opens defense of its NCAA championship with a trip to the Vanderbilt Legends Club in Franklin, Tennessee, on May 16-18 to compete as the No. 3 seed in a field of 13 teams at the Franklin regional hosted by Vanderbilt.

The fields for each of the six NCAA regional championships were announced Thursday morning.

Each of the teams in the field at the NCAA Franklin regional will be competing for five qualifying spots into the NCAA Division I championships to be held May 27-June 1 in Eugene, Oregon.

Five teams will qualify from each of the six regionals to make up the 30-team field at the year’s NCAA championships.

This marks the ninth straight season and the 10th time in 11 seasons under coach Chuck Winstead the Tigers will compete in NCAA regional play. They look to qualify for the NCAA championships for the sixth time in the past seven seasons by earning a top-five finish at the regional level.

Joining No. 3 seed LSU in the 13-team Franklin regional field is No. 1 seed Texas, No. 2 seed and tournament host Vanderbilt, No. 4 seed Washington and No. 5 seed Virginia. Rounding out the field No. 6 seed Houston, No. 7 seed Pepperdine, No. 8 seed Kennesaw State, No. 9 seed Michigan, No. 10 seed Troy, No. 11 seed East Carolina, No. 12 seed UT-Martin and No. 13 seed Georgetown.


MAGNUS EARNS BID TO STILLWATER REGIONAL: Louisiana-Lafayette senior Haraldur Magnus earned his first career individual bid into one of the six 54-hole NCAA regional tournaments as he was named one of five individuals to compete at the Stillwater regional at Karsten Creek Golf Club.

The low five teams and the low individual not on those teams from each regional will advance to the final. Team and individual medalist titles will be decided May 27-June 1 at Eugene Country Club in Eugene, Oregon.

Magnus posted 10 top-25 performances this season and has 26 in his three-year career with the program.

He had four straight top 10 performances to start the season.

Magnus is ranked 110th in the nation with a 72.09 scoring average through 34 rounds. Magnus has posted 18 rounds of par or better and a tournament victory this season.
