What: International Grand Isle Tarpon Rodeo. First held in 1928 and makes it the longest-standing fishing competition in the country.

When: Thursday through Saturday. Fishing begins at sunrise Thursday and ends when scales close at 6 p.m. Saturday.

Where: Grand Isle, Sand Dollar Marina weighstation. Headquarters at the air-conditioned Grand Isle Tarpon Rodeo Pavilion near the weighstation on the east end of the island.

Weighstation hours: 8 a.m.-8 p.m. Thursday-Friday; 8 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturday.

Tickets/Outlets: $40. Blue Water Sports, Bridge Side Marina, Camardelle’s Seafood, Nez Coupe Gift Shop, Sand Dollar Marina & Sureway Supermarket on Grand Isle; Moran’s Marina at Fourchon; TYD Store and Tackle & Griffin’s Ice and Fuel in Leeville; Songy’s Sporting Goods & West Marine in Houma; and Puglia’s Sporting Goods in Metairie.


Three places in all categories, except five places in Tarpon and Tag & Release, and two places in Blue Marlin. Rodeo ticket must be presented with catch at the weighstation.

Big Game Division: Tarpon longer than 41/2 feet, Dolphin (more than 20 pounds), Blue Marlin, Blackfin Tuna, Yellowfin Tuna (more than 50 pounds) & Wahoo.

Shoreline Division: Barracuda, Bluefish, Bonito, Cobia, Jack Crevalle, Grouper, King Mackerel, Spanish Mackerel, Mangrove Snapper, Spadefish, Tripletail.

Inside Division: Croaker, Gafftopsail Catfish, Black Drum, Flounder, Redfish (anglers limited to 1 redfish 27 or more inches long throughout the rodeo), Redfish Stringer (5 redfish, 16 inches long but not longer than 27 inches), Sheepshead, Speckled Trout, White Trout.

Tag-and-Release Divisions: Big game species & Tarpon. Tarpon (100 points), Blue Marlin (500 points), White Marlin (200 points), Sailfish (150 points), Yellowfin Tuna (50 points, maximum of two yellowfin tuna per angler, per day counted in this division)

Awards: First tarpon weighed, top all-around anglers in Big Game, Shoreline & Inside divisions.

Children’s Division: 12 and younger, no fee. Scales open under rodeo tent 11 a.m.-3 p.m. daily. Species: Gafftopsail Catfish, Croaker, Channel Mullet, Hardhead Catfish and White Trout.



11 a.m.: Pavilion opens

11 a.m.-3 p.m.: Children’s Division scales opens (Pavilion). Ages 5-7 & 8-10 groups.

11 a.m.-2 p.m.: Children’s Crab Races registration. Children must bring own crab to races.

2 p.m.: Children’s Crab Races (Pavilion)


Fishing begins at daylight

7 p.m.: President’s Welcome Party, boiled shrimp (Pavilion)

6- 10 p.m.: Music: Rockin’ Dupsie (Pavilion)

8 p.m.: Weighstation closes (marina)


Noon-4 p.m.: Music: DJ Captain P (Pavilion)

3-5 p.m.: RJ & Jay Paul Molinere (“Swamp People”) autographs/photos (Pavilion)

7-11 p.m.: Music: Top Cats (Pavilion)
