BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The expectation around the SWAC going into this season is that the Southern Jaguars should have a strong chance to repeat as conference champions.

The SWAC released its annual preseason poll and all-conference team Friday at SWAC media day, with the Jaguars picked to repeat as West Division champions.

Grambling was picked fifth and last in the SWAC West. Prairie View was picked second in the West, followed by Arkansas-Pine Bluff and Texas Southern.

Alabama State was the pick to win the East.

No overall champion was chosen in a vote of SWAC coaches, sports information directors and select national media members.

Two Southern players were first-team selections:

• WR Willie Quinn

• OL Anthony Mosley

Five Jaguars were named to the second team:

• RB Lenard Tillery

• OL Zach Brown

• DL Arthur Miley

• LB Daniel Brown

• RS Willie Quinn

Grambling did not have any players selected to either team.

Arkansas-Pine Bluff quarterback Ben Anderson was named SWAC preseason offensive player of the year although he was a second-team selection at his position behind Jerry Lovelocke of Prairie View. Alabama State linebacker Kourtney Berry is the preseason defensive player of the year.

Southern opens the regular season Aug. 31 at Louisiana-Lafayette.
