Houston scored early and often and defeated the Jaguars 62-13 in both teams' season opener in Reliant Stadium on Friday.
Houston scored on each of its first three possessions to take a 13-0 lead in the second quarter.
But Southern cut the lead to 13-6 with 8:26 in the first half when quarterback Dray Joseph threw a 19-yard touchdown pass to Samuel Altman. Houston's Trevor Harris blocked the extra-point kick.
Houston then came back and kept its score-possession streak going when running back Ryan Jackson ran around right end for a touchdown to make the score 20-6 with 6:11 remaining. Jackson's score finished an eight-play, 71-yard drive.
The Cougars' Earl Foster recovered a muffed punt by Southern's Marquon Webster at the Jaguars' 12-yard line with 3:29 left. Houston quarterback David Piland threw a 10-yard touchdown pass to Deontay Greenberry three plays later to make the score 27-6 with 2:34 remaining, and the rout was on.
Houston led 27-6 at halftime.
