Word: New Works by Tony Nozero_lowres

Tony Nozero is a longtime drummer who put his band gigs on hold to become a full-time painter. This exhibition, his first solo gallery show, was preceded by a certain amount of buzz of an especially subtle, almost subliminal, sort as his name started popping up here and there. This body of work puts a painterly face on the name with gutsy, rawboned and colorful compositions that may look like graffiti at first, until you notice some of the blue-chip antecedents — hints of Picasso, Giacometti and Motherwell — he melds into the sort of expressionistic funk we see in The Speaker (pictured). — D.
