Meat Fest

Chef Donald Link has opened Cochon Butcher (930 Tchoupitoulas St., 588-7675;, a retail meat market and sandwich shop behind his restaurant Cochon. The shop specializes in the cured meats and charcuterie of both Italian and Cajun butcher shops. Sandwiches are served on house-made bread, and the shop also offers cheese plates and wine by the glass.

Meat appears in name only on the menu of Café Bamboo (435 Esplanade Ave., 940-5546;, a new vegetarian restaurant below the Dragon's Den nightclub. So breaded "chicken," kebabs and even the "sausage" in red beans and rice are made with soy and wheat gluten-based ingredients. Café Bamboo serves dinner Tuesday through Saturday, and a smaller late-night menu is available until 2 a.m.
