Longway Tavern to open in French Quarter_lowres

Liam Deegen will run the bar program at Longway Tavern.

The LeBlanc + Smith (www.leblancandsmith.com) restaurant group, which runs restaurants including Cavan (3607 Magazine St., 504-509-7655; www.cavannola.com) and whiskey bar Barrel Proof (1201 Magazine St.; www.barrelproofnola.com), will open Longway Tavern (www.longwaytavern.com) in the French Quarter next year.

  Longway Tavern takes over the building at 719 Toulouse St., which dates back to 1794, and once was home to the writer Roark Bradford and his wife Mary Rose, who hosted guests including William Faulkner, Ernest Hemingway and John Carroll, according to a statement from the restaurant group.

  The group operates French Quarter restaurants Sylvain (625 Chartres St., 504-265-8123; www.sylvainnola.com) and Meauxbar (942 N. Rampart St., 504-569-9979; www.meauxbar.com). Longway will be a neighborhood tavern, according to the release.

  "We have always had this vision to make sure that the French Quarter always felt like a neighborhood first and foremost," proprietor Robert LeBlanc said. "That was why we opened Sylvain."

  Chef John Sinclair of Barrel Proof is designing its menu. It will include fried calamari with blistered tomatoes, charred lemon and bitter greens, a steak sandwich with caramelized onion aioli, grilled scallions and Worcestershire, and a chicken thigh served with root vegetable hash, cauliflower cream and mostarda.

  Longway Tavern's bar program will be run by Barrel Proof beverage director Liam Deegan. Drinks will include classic cocktails such as Gibsons and Champs Elysees, as well as new creations like the Chartreuse swizzle and an Irish coffee Manhattan.
