Lack of sleep or inadequate amounts of sleep can cause irritability, stress and sadness. Chronic insomnia can lead to mood disorders like depression and anxiety. Poor sleep can also result in problems with concentration and a loss of productivity. Conversely, quality sleep can promote a sense of well-being.

Most adults need between 7–9 hours each night. If you are not getting that, it is important to take steps toward getting a good night’s sleep. Some steps you can take to help sleep better include:

• Cutting out caffeine and alcohol, especially before bedtime

• Turning off the television and other electronics in the bedroom

• Avoiding exercise too close to bedtime

• Establishing a calming bedtime routine
