In September 2016, the Contemporary Arts Center announced it would lease the top two floors of its building to the Domain Companies to create The Shop, an office space targeted at cultural and arts groups and technology businesses. The Shop opened Sept. 1 and the Domain Companies are holding events to display the space.
The architecture firm Eskew+Dumez+Ripple designed the renovation, and it includes the addition of a rooftop deck. There are dedicated office spaces as well as an ample amount of common space, with conference rooms, couches, arm chairs, booths and private phone booths, a kitchen, beer taps and more. The Shop rents dedicated offices and "Commons" membership plans for $375 per month, in which members get use of the common spaces and access to services such as video conferencing, Wi-Fi, printing, scanning and can purchase other business services. The Shop will hold networking events in the "co-work" space, and tenants and Domain Companies partners may be able to use it for events, says marketing director Megan McNeil. Half of the office space is rented, McNeil says.
The Domain Companies have offices in The Shop. Domain is behind the $450 million South Market District development of apartments, restaurants and retail space along O'Keefe Avenue.
The CAC remodeled its first floor, closing in its first-floor exhibition space.
The offices replace two floors used occasionally by the CAC. The upper floors were used as exhibition space for Prospect.1 in 2008, and the third floor hosted a production of Fantastic Mr. Fox performed in a vast cardboard labyrinth.
