The annual Oak Street Po-Boy Festival announced this year's top sandwiches Sunday afternoon.
Thousands of people packed Oak Street off Carrollton Avenue, where vendors offered traditional and creative po-boys. This year, guests wanting to purchase a po-boy were required to purchase a $5 wristband, and for $25, one could skip the long lines completely.
[jump] Though the near perfect fall weather beckoned large crowds, this year’s festival felt more spread out and less crammed than previous years. A panel of judges sampled more than 50 po-boys offered, and announced their favorites mid-afternoon.
Newcomers this year included Simone’s Market, which had two wins: most original (Lebacajun po-boy) and best poultry (smoked fried chicken po-boy). The best overall sandwich was a repeat from years past, Red Fish Grill’s barbecue oyster po-boy.
