With last year'sFake Jazz Fest
, it seems like a new genre of freelance work that I'd like to call "extra-vals" (that's "extra" and "festivals." If anyone can suggest a less clunky portmanteau, please let me know) was invented. Besides the standard standing around involved in extra work — in this case, for the HBO show Treme — this gig offered free food and prize giveaways in addition to your chance to be on TV (i.e. a brief glimpse of the back of your head behind Steve Zahn, if you're lucky)!
The website BeInAMovie.com offers a similar gig on Monday when it invites locals on the set of Now You See Me, a film starring Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson, Isla Fisher, Mark Ruffalo, Morgan Freeman and Michael Caine that's been filming here (hence the reason some of those celebs have been spotted around town recently, which you know if you've been following Y@ Speak).
On Monday they'll be shooting a scene in the film in which the main characters, a group of illusionists, perform a pivotal magic trick at what is supposed to be the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Extras will serve as the audience in that scene. The gig also features food and a raffle of electronics, gift cards, movie memorabilia and more. Extras won't be paid in anything besides free stuff and "all the film fun you can handle" (that's a sampling of some of the goofy language used on the website), but the press release promises "some paid extra parts" (which may just mean the free copy of the site's "web booklet" "How to Be a Paid Extra." Eh, it's something to do if you've got nothing else going on.)
The gig is from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday. Click here for more details.
