There's a free self-defense class for women and girls at Glitter Box Dec. 14 [CANCELED]_lowres

As of Dec. 14, this event has been canceled. According to Glitter Box, it will be rescheduled in the coming weeks.

Boxing coach and personal trainer Deanie Morgan will teach a self-defense class for women and girls of all ages at Glitter Box Dec. 14.

The class, which is hosted by the gallery, "intergenerational networking" nonprofit Girl Code and women's running collective Girl Gang NOLA, offers first-hand training for self-defense in scenarios like running or exercising alone. Morgan says he usually tailors the class to participants, but attendees probably will talk about common-sense situational awareness and work in pairs to practice fending off attacks from behind or the side.

Following the class, participants will enjoy popcorn and a screening of the animated movie Mulan. Participants should wear comfortable clothes and shoes with traction (such as sneakers), and are welcome to bring pillows and blankets for the screening.

Glitter Box curator Alice McGillicuddy says the event is part of a series partnering with Girl Code, which was started by 16-year-old Kennedi Carter in an effort to empower girls and build relationships between women of different generational groups.

“I can’t think of anything more exciting than having a self-defense class with women from all ages, or girls from ages 4 to 60, which would be incredible," McGillicuddy says. "Hopefully we have enough space.”

The class begins at 6 p.m. It's free to attend, but donations for Girl Code will be accepted during the event.
