With the Mississippi River just a half-foot from cresting in New Orleans, here are a couple of pictures taken at the Moonwalk in the French Quarter.

The Morganza Spillway has been opened to alleviate the swollen Mississippi River, with four gates feeding water into the Atchafalaya River, and more will be opened gradually. The Weather Channel reported 25 barges broke loose in Baton Rouge and hit a bridge, which was closed temporarily. Morgan City's 12,000 residents are bracing for flooding as the Atchafalaya is expected funnel water into their city later in the week. Opening the spillway is expected to flood thousands of acres of farmland in the Atchafalaya Basin, including about 600,000 acres of cultivated row crops.

With all the angst about flooding from the swollen river, the weather is actually lovely in the Crescent City, with sunny skies and temperatures expected to reach the high 70s today, and no rain expected until Friday.
