Russell Schweiss, Mosaic vice president of mine permitting, land management and public affairs, speaks Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2019, at Mosaic's Uncle Sam plant in Convent. Company officials are trying to halt the movement of a giant wall of waste phosphogypsum and prevent it from threatening a large cooling pond containing acidic process water inside the pile of gypsum nearly 200 feet in the air. Schweiss was describing how earth underneath the pile has shifted, or sheered, leading to the movement of a pile wall.
