A Louisiana man was hiking the Merkle Trail in Arizona on Thursday before being swarmed and killed by bees.

According to a WWL-TV report, Alex Bestler, 23, of Elton, was hiking with a friend at about 9 a.m. Thursday when "without provocation or warning, a large swarm of bees descended on both of them," deputies said.

According to a release, Alex was found lying on the ground, but deputies could not approach because of how aggressive the bees were. Firefighters assisted officers in loading Bestler onto a park utility vehicle while still covered with bees and the swarm pursuing, according to the release.

When the bees began to dissipate Bestler was transported to Desert Vista Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

The area of the park where the attack occurred is now closed while the danger is assessed.
