The Zulu Social Aid and Pleasure Club, Inc. held its annual coronation ball Friday evening at the New Orleans Ernest N. Morial Convention Center featuring the crowning of Brent D. Washington, King Zulu Elect, and Troye M. Washington, Queen Zulu Select.

“Celebrating the Tricentennial Zulu Style” was the theme of the coronation ball. Rodney P. Mason Sr., chaplain, opened with a prayer. Dennis Robertson Jr., chairman of Carnival activities for the organization, blew the traditional whistle indicating the start of the ball. The Marine Corps Band New Orleans played “The Star-Spangled Banner.

Clifton Jones served as coordinator of the coronation and Clarence A. Becknell Sr., Zulu historian emeritus, served as the official master of ceremonies.

Naaman C. Stewart, president, presented the welcome address for the organization. The officers and board of directors, 2018 Zulu characters, coronation chairman and Carnival principles were introduced.

The 2018 royal court became official when Donna M. Glapion, Queen Zulu 2017, crowned Mrs. Washington queen and Adonis C. Exposé, King Zulu 2017, crowned Mr. Washington king.

The royal court of his majesty included Randolph M. Davis and Dr. Michael J. McKnight Sr., the king’s charges d’affaires; Brent Washington Jr. and Bryce Washington, the royal princes; and Camden Leon Scott, the prince. The King’s Tribesmen included Halbert W. Chambers, Troy J. Jackson Sr., Freddie L. Jones, Burnell Scales Sr., Keith Thomas and Sterling D. Williams Jr. Pages to his majesty included Windell Thomas Bean III, Khalib Lee, Chance E. Taylor, Eric Trenton Coleman Vaughn, Tahj J. Jackson, the king's royal page. A host of dukes, advisors and aides that assisted the king.

The royal court of her majesty included Ashley Jenkins and Jefferson Reese Sr., the queen’s chargés d'affaires. The Queen’s Tribesmen included Terrance D. Madison, Tracy Madison, and Aristide C. Williams Sr. The queen’s attendants included Rhonda B. Barney, Tyra J. Brown, Gaynell W. George, Anita B. Madison, Yolanda S. McGowan, Monique M. Scott, Olivette G. Temple, Lesley E. Thomas, Dionne B. West and Marcia C. Williams. The majestic royal princesses were Sommer A. Madison and Taryn J. Madison. The royal page was Peri C. Smith and the pages were Brooke Alexis, Angele M. Barrow, Ryla D. Garrett, Cai Hales, Brooklynn A. Jackson and Bailey Fields. A host of dukes, consultants, aides and assistants also attended her majesty.

As the monarchs were escorted to their throne, the maids were introduced by Darrin Mire, announcer.
