Hogs for the Cause is back, bigger and tastier than ever _lowres

Advocate staff photo by ELIOT KAMENITZ-- Rain is yet again making for a wet start to Hogs for the Cause. That's nothing new. In this photo from the event in 2014, members of the team from Pig Lebowski continue to cook despite the deluge.

Update, 1 p.m.:

Hogs for the Cause has been canceled for Friday.

"The safety of our Hogs for the Cause teams, patrons, and staff is of the utmost importance," organizers said in a news release. "Due to the weather, we are unable to open our gates tonight. Friday tickets will grant access to the festivities on Saturday."

Organizers said they are devising a refund and or donation to the Cause process. Visit www.hogsforthecause.org for updates.

Gates open at 11:00 a.m. Saturday.

Original story:

Rain is yet again making for a very wet start to Hogs for the Cause, and as a result organizers of the festival and charity cook-off have pushed back the start time for Friday’s festivities to 6 p.m.

The event turns the City Park Festival Grounds into a extravaganza of pork, music and drinks, with 95 cook-off teams competing for awards and serving their creations to the festival crowd and bands performing on two stages.

Rainy weather has been a common theme at the event in recent years, and seasoned participants and pork fanatics have learned to adapt in the past. Shrimp boots have become standard gear for many attendees and cook-off team members, and teams have been building more elaborate camp sites and party pavilions in part to be prepared for Mother Nature.

Saturday’s schedule remains unchanged.
