The 2017 Satchmo Summerfest roster includes festival first-timers Nicholas Payton, Stephanie Jordan and the Pin Stripe Brass Band, plus Ellis Marsalis, Kermit Ruffins, Jeremy Davenport, Leroy Jones, Tim Laughlin, Tom McDermott, Charmaine Neville and other favorites.
The 17th edition of festival is August 4-6 at the Old U.S. Mint at the foot of Esplanade Avenue. The festival, founded to celebrate the legacy of namesake Louis “Satchmo” Armstrong, returns to its traditional home at the Mint after experimenting with a move to Jackson Square in 2016.
Daily admission is $5. Children age 12 and under are admitted for free.
Payton cut his teeth as a young trumpeter heavily influenced by Armstrong. He has gone on to incorporate a wide range of influences, as well as vocals and keyboards, into his music.
Jordan, an especially elegant jazz vocalist, hails from an extended family of musicians. The Pin Stripe Brass Band tends toward more traditional brass band music.
Other acts making their debuts at the festival this year include the Ashlin Parker Trumpet Mafia, Quiana Lynell and David L. Harris.
Satchmo Summerfest is produced by French Quarter Festivals Inc., the same non-profit that stages the French Quarter Festival in April and the Christmas New Orleans Style concert series in December.
The intimate festival consists of two tented stages outdoors on the grounds of the Mint, plus the indoor Back o’ Town Stage on the Mint’s second floor. The Back o’ Town Stage will include a dance floor and dance instructions by NOLA Jitterbugs.
Other attractions include the Satchmo Symposium, a series of lectures and presentations about elements of Armstrong’s life, career and influences, as well as the Pops’ Playhouse for Kids area.
