A local name that's practically synonymous with boiled seafood in Bucktown is taking over a two-story Uptown restaurant space on the edge of the Irish Channel.
Deanie’s Seafood plans to open a new location at 2200 Magazine St., an address that was previously home to Charcoal’s Gourmet Burger Bar. The new Deanie’s is slated to open here in December, said proprietor Chandra Chifici.
Deanie’s serves seasonal boiled seafood next to standards like fried seafood, BBQ shrimp and stuffed flounder. The restaurant’s "giant" and even "half" seafood platters are stacked with enough shrimp, oysters, catfish, soft shell crabs and crawfish boulettes to feed a family.
The new location will serve much of the same menu as the original, with some adjustments. It will have an oyster bar, and a station dedicated to chargrilled oysters.
Charcoal’s debuted here in 2013, on a prominent but long-vacant lot at the corner of Magazine Street and Jackson Avenue. The two-story brick building has a large, covered gallery for outdoor dining overlooking the street, and ground floor tables on the sidewalk, in addition to dining rooms across both floors.
The burger restaurant closed last spring.
Deanie’s, meanwhile, is one of the longest-lived names for New Orleans style seafood, and its original location remains the oldest of the cluster of restaurants in the seafood hub of Bucktown.
It was started in 1961 by John and Alma “Deanie” Livacari on Old Hammond Highway. The business moved a few times before landing at its current home on Lake Avenue. The Chifici family has run the business since the 1980s. The same family once operated the Uptown restaurant Chifici’s and the Metairie restaurant Gromboli’s, which both subsequently closed.
In 2002, they opened a second Deanie's in the French Quarter, at 841 Iberville St.
