New Orleans police said they arrested a 28-year-old man on gun and drug counts Thursday after conducting a traffic stop in Algiers and discovering he had a stolen gun and was carrying marijuana.

About 7 a.m., Officer Michael Guasco stopped a blue van that didn’t have a displayed license plate on it, police said. Guasco turned on his lights and sirens near Westbend Parkway and Herschel Street.

The driver, Shawn Lewis, stopped the van nearly three blocks away at Halsey Street and Anson Drive. At that point, Guasco saw a .9mm pistol by the driver’ s seat. He ordered Lewis out of the vehicle and placed him in handcuffs.

During investigation, Guasco learned the pistol was reported stolen from Kenner in 2003. He also found that Lewis was in possession of marijuana, police said.

Lewis was booked on illegal possession of a firearm, possession of a stolen firearm and possession of narcotics with a firearm.
