Deputies arriving at a Harvey apartment in January found a woman lying on the floor suffering from a single gunshot wound to the chest. Her breathing was labored, and they feared she could die.
With an ambulance still on its way on the evening of Jan. 9, Deputy Gary Kessel and a colleague swung into action. Both deputies helped secure a dressing over the woman’s chest wound. She arrived at the University Medical Center in critical condition, but survived.
Jefferson Parish sheriff’s deputies have now arrested the teenager they believe was responsible for the shooting at the St. Germaine apartment complex. They booked Eddie Joseph, 17, on a count of attempted second-degree murder Friday.
Details on how investigators connected Joseph to the shooting are scant. A Sheriff’s Office initial incident report states that while the deputies were tending to the wounded woman, she told them that she had been sitting outside of her apartment smoking a cigarette when she was approached by the shooter.
The assailant allegedly told the woman, “come with me.”
When the victim told the man no, according to an incident report, he produced a semi-automatic handgun and shot her once. The man then fled.
The woman told deputies that her assailant was unknown to her, but according to booking records he was her neighbor. Joseph was arrested in the same apartment complex where the shooting occurred on Friday.
Joseph remained in custody at the Jefferson Parish Correctional Center in Gretna on Monday.
