A New Orleans man has been arrested in connection with a 2013 rape inside a tent at a homeless people’s camp near Tulane and South Claiborne avenues.

The female victim told police that she shared a tent at the camp with Keith Richardson, 54, and the sexual assaults occurred over the course of a year.

The arrest warrant for Richardson cites an Aug. 20, 2013, incident. The woman told investigators that Richardson started punching her with a closed fist and forced her to undress. He then raped her, she said.

Police said they were able to identify Richardson because he gave the woman a driver’s license and Social Security card to hold in her purse and because his DNA matched that collected in an October 2013 burglary arrest.

Richardson was found Monday near Magazine and Terpsichore streets. He was booked on a count of aggravated rape and is being held on $75,000 bail.
