Emily Ford was never happier than after a long day toiling in New Orleans' aging cemeteries, painstakingly surveying and restoring century-old tombs.
After spending several years as a volunteer for the non-profit organization Save Our Cemeteries, Ford was hired as a restoration consultant. Then, in 2013, the trained historian was given another job by the group, this one paid for by a federal grant.
Ford was hired to conduct a tomb-by-tomb survey of Lafayette No. 1, one of the city's most historic and frequently visited "cities of the dead."
Two years later, Ford says she was being paid only a fraction of the grant amount and discovered that the organization has been submitting fake invoices made to look like hers.
