Signs of spring are everywhere. Azaleas are in full bloom, and trees of all shapes and species are full of new growth. If you would like to learn what’s blooming in area wetlands, a free guided walk is planned from 10:30 a.m. to 12:10 p.m. Saturday at the Barataria Preserve of Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve, 6588 Barataria Blvd., Marrero.

Marker dedication

This weekend, the Jefferson Parish Historical Commission and the Jefferson Historical Society of Louisiana will unveil a marker commemorating the Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve and the late educator and environmentalist Frank J. Ehret Jr., who lobbied for the park.

The unveiling is at 2 p.m. Sunday, at the northwestern corner of Louisiana 3134 and Louisiana 45 in Crown Point

The program is open to the public.

Garden club to meet

The Colonial Garden Club will hold its final meeting for its calendar year at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the home of Judy Velez in Harahan.

Club President Susan Hardeman will conduct the business, which includes collecting dues and planning programs and venues for next year.

Chairwomen for next month’s installation luncheon, Michel Boudreaux, Susan Bradley, Melinda Jackson and Jeanne Turner, will take the members’ reservations. Turner will also announce the Garden of the Spring honoree.

Following the meeting, a guest speaker from Perino’s Garden Center will address the group.

Co-hosting the luncheon meeting with Velez will be Anne-Marie Boudreaux, Marion Petry, Peggy St. Pe and Cindy Schalck.

Jazz brunch planned

Divine Mercy Parish in Kenner will be honored as an Outstanding Pro-Life Parish for its work on behalf of the anti-abortion movement at the annual jazz brunch and auction sponsored by Catholic Charities ACCESS Pregnancy Program on April 17 at noon at the Audubon Tea Room.

AARP driving class

A four-hour AARP Smart Driver class will be held from 5 to 9 p.m. April 21 at the Elmwood Fitness Center, 1200 S. Clearview Parkway, Harahan.

The class is open to anyone 50 and older. Those completing the course will receive a certificate that may qualify them for a discount from their automobile insurer good for up to three years. The cost for this class is $15 for AARP members and $20 for non-AARP members.
