The Chalmette ferry will be out of service this weekend while crews replace the landing barge that allows travelers to get on and off the vessel, according to a news release from the Regional Transit Authority.
Service on the ferry, which runs between lower Algiers and Chalmette, will be suspended after its run at 9 p.m. Friday. The ferry will be running again in time for the first trip at 6 a.m. Monday, according to the RTA.
The current barge has been in place for 36 years and is being replaced using federal grant funds, according to the release. The new barge is expected to decrease the number of service outages on the route, officials said.
