Metairie man sentenced to 50 years for sexual battery of girl _lowres

A 63-year-old Metairie man convicted last week of sexual battery of a 5-year-old girl was sentenced by a state district judge on Thursday to 50 years in prison.

Mario Chavez, who was found guilty of abusing a girl who lived near his Rye Street apartment in June 2014, faced 25 to 99 years in prison.

Chavez was sentenced by Judge Adrian Adams of the 24th Judicial District Court in Gretna.

Adams denied a defense request for a new trial and ordered that at least 25 years of the that sentence be served without probation, parole or suspended sentence, the Jefferson Parish District Attorney’s office said.

Chavez will have to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life if he is ever released from prison.
