Thousands of people on the West Bank woke up without power Friday morning after a vehicle crashed into an Entergy substation.
More than 2,000 customers were without power in Westwego and Marrero as of 1:45 p.m., according to Entergy. As many as 25,000 people were without power after the crash. Power is expected to be restored by 5 p.m.
Crews were working to "safely repair the damage" before power could be restored, Entergy said, estimating power for many could be restored as early as 7 a.m. The crash occurred in the early hours Friday morning.
Five Westwego area schools — Butler Elementary Thibodeaux Elementary, Pitre Elementary, Worley Middle and Patrick F. Taylor Academy — were impacted by the outages, according to a report from WWL-TV.
The schools are open, but student absences will be excused, the school system said.
