NEW ORLEANS — A New Orleans union leader was charged Tuesday with embezzlement after U.S. Department of Labor investigators say he stole more than $16,000 from his union’s bank account.

Wayne Boudoin, 60, of Edgard, the president of Local 709 Security, Police and Fire Professionals of America International Union from September 2003 to January 2011, is accused of taking $16,367.96 in union membership dues by using checks and a debit card to make unauthorized purchases and withdraw cash from ATMs, U.S. Attorney Dana J. Boente said in a news release announcing the charge in a bill of information.

If convicted, Boudoin faces up to five years in prison and a fine up to $10,000, Boente said.
