The New Orleans Fire Department was fighting a four-alarm fire Thursday night in the 2000 block of North Derbigny Street in the 7th Ward. Earlier, there was a two-alarm fire just a few blocks away on North Derbigny.

In the four-alarm blaze, a vacant building caught on fire and threatened the buildings on either side.

Fire Superintendent Tim McConnell said the fires appeared to be suspicious in origin, though it was too early to say anything definite.
