Jack Mierl, an 11th-grader at Mandeville High and a student in the creative writing department of the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts, won first place in the Southern University Pinkie Gordon Lane Poetry Contest for his poem, “We Walk Down Rosemary Beach.”

Jack was competing with more than 60 other Louisiana high school students.

His poem best represented the guidelines of a modern, exciting poem that explores both the possible and impossible, according to contest officials.

The contest is in honor of Pinkie Gordon Lane, the first black woman to receive a Ph.D. from LSU, who later became Louisiana’s Poet Laureate from 1989 to 1993.
