The man suspected of fatally shooting his ex-girlfriend inside her New Orleans East apartment last week was identified as the gunman by his father, according to court documents.
According to an application for an arrest warrant, Jermal Holmes called his father after the shooting to tell him he had killed Delores Jones, 25, at 9:45 a.m. Friday inside her unit at the Chateau d’Orleans apartments in the 14700 block of Chef Menteur Highway.
Holmes’ father then dialed 911 and told dispatchers about his son’s call.
Police arrived at Jones’ apartment to find her face up in her bedroom with a gunshot wound to her head, according to court documents. She died at the scene.
According to court documents, Holmes stole Jones’ car after the shooting and fled the scene before he called his father.
After calling 911, Holmes’ father, whom police did not identify, met his son and drove him to West Jefferson Medical Center for a psychiatric evaluation, according to court documents. Holmes’ father then told police where they could find his son, who was arrested at the hospital by New Orleans police officers with assistance from the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office.
While police have not identified a motive, family and friends who gathered at the apartment complex after the shooting said the couple had broken up and Holmes had been stalking Jones.
A search of court records in Orleans and Jefferson parishes found no restraining or protective orders filed against Holmes.
He was booked with second-degree murder and remained jailed Wednesday. His bail was set at $400,000, according to Orleans Parish Prison records.
